As a daily ritual, we peer through handheld, low-res windows to worlds within and beyond. (Sub)Standard forms of communication influence our movements, communications, and understandings. As information is digitized, compressed, sped up, and networked it becomes highly opportunistic. The Image circulates beyond its creators' original intent or imagination. The multitude of media we process is filtered through our own perspectives, histories, and practices and takes on new shapes, transforming through our personal bytes. Where original maps dissipate, new paths form, looking toward the past, present, and future.
‘Resolution Substandard’ is a group show exploring the gaps inherent in networked communication. How do we navigate and consume our chosen media, and how are we responsible for its trajectory? How can innate gaps and cracks lead us down new pathways? How do we bridge the inherent gaps? The works involved in this show will look at what’s lost during transmission, and what’s gained.
"The poor image is a copy in motion. Its quality is bad,
its resolution substandard...
The poor image is no longer about the real thing—the originary original.
Instead, it is about its own real conditions of existence: about swarm circulation,
digital dispersion, fractured and flexible temporalities. It is about defiance and
appropriation just as it is about conformism and exploitation.
In short: it is about reality."
